In short: in European (EU) kids' sizing, the size is the child's height in centimeters. A child who is 70 cm tall wears size 74; a child who is 90 cm tall wears size 92. Measure your child, find their height range in the chart below, and if they fall between two sizes, pick the larger one.
The age on the label is only a guide. Two six-month-old babies can be 5 cm apart in height, so height is always the more reliable reference.
Kids' clothing size chart (0–8 years)
The chart below uses EU sizes, the same ones you'll find on the Villervalla clothes in our shop.
| Size (EU) | Approximate age | Child's height (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 0–1 month | 46–50 |
| 56 | 1–2 months | 51–56 |
| 62 | 2–4 months | 57–62 |
| 68 | 4–6 months | 63–68 |
| 74 | 6–9 months | 69–74 |
| 80 | 9–12 months | 75–80 |
| 86 | 12–18 months | 81–86 |
| 92 | 18–24 months | 87–92 |
| 98 | 2–3 years | 93–98 |
| 104 | 3–4 years | 99–104 |
| 110 | 4–5 years | 105–110 |
| 116 | 5–6 years | 111–116 |
| 122 | 6–7 years | 117–122 |
| 128 | 7–8 years | 123–128 |
The rule is simple: the size number is the top of the height range. Size 74 fits a child up to 74 cm tall. You'll find the same chart, plus tips for hats and socks, in our size guide.
How to measure your child
All you need is a soft tape measure and two minutes of patience.
Height
- Babies (up to about 1 year): lay your baby on their back on a flat surface. Measure from the top of the head to the heel, with the legs gently straightened. A second adult helps a lot.
- Children who can stand: barefoot, back against a wall, looking straight ahead. Rest a book on top of their head, mark the spot on the wall, and measure from the floor to the mark.
Chest (optional)
If your child is sturdier or slimmer than average, measure the chest too: run the tape under the arms, around the widest part, without pulling tight. This matters most for jackets, overalls and tops, where width counts more than length.
When comparing is easier
Take a piece of clothing that fits well right now, lay it flat on a table and measure it. Compare it with the measurements of the item you want to buy. This works especially well for pants, where leg length is what decides the fit.
Tips for getting the size right
Between two sizes? Go with the larger one
If your baby is 68 cm tall, choose size 74, not 68. Slightly bigger clothes can be worn right away with the sleeves rolled up. Clothes that are too small can't be worn at all.
Keep growth spurts in mind
In the first year, babies move through sizes very quickly, sometimes within a few weeks. That's why it pays to buy just a few pieces in each size and to always look one size ahead. After age 2, growth slows down and each size usually lasts longer.
Think about the season
If it's fall and you're buying a winter overall, ask yourself how tall your child will be two or three months from now, not how tall they are today.
Fabric matters
Our Villervalla clothes are made of 95% organic cotton and 5% elastane. The elastane lets the fabric stretch as your child moves and spring back into shape after wearing and washing. So a piece that fits just right stays comfortable, and one bought a size up doesn't look baggy. To be safe, wash at the temperature shown on the care label.
For example, the Baby Elephant wrap body comes in sizes 50–80, and the Space bodysuit in sizes 62–92.
Sizing for hats and socks
Accessories don't follow the height chart. For hats and bonnets, the size is the head circumference in centimeters, for example 38/40. Measure around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, across the widest part at the back, and choose the range it falls into.
Socks are usually sized by age, for example 0–2 months or 2–6 months. Here it's best to go by your child's actual age, because a sock that's too big slips off easily.
What size to buy as a gift
When you don't know the child's height, use their age and go one size up. Here's a quick guide:
- For a newborn: size 56 or 62. Size 50 only fits for a few weeks, and parents usually get plenty of clothes in that size.
- 3-month-old baby: 68.
- 6-month-old baby: 74 or 80.
- 1-year-old: 86.
- 2-year-old: 92 or 98.
- 3–4-year-old: 104 or 110.
- 5–6-year-old: 116 or 122.
- 7–8-year-old: 128.
If you're giving a seasonal piece, check when it will be worn: a winter jacket bought in summer needs an extra size. Browse our baby collection or, for the first weeks, our newborn selection.
Frequently asked questions
What does size 62 mean in baby clothes?
Size 62 fits a baby between 57 and 62 cm tall, usually between 2 and 4 months old. The size number is the child's maximum height in centimeters.
How do I choose a size if I don't know the child's height?
Use the age in the chart and go one size up. For a 1-year-old, for example, choose 86. If you can, ask the parents for the child's height: it's the most reliable reference.
What if my baby is between two sizes?
Choose the larger size. Kids grow fast, and a slightly roomier piece is easy to wear with the sleeves or pant legs rolled up.
How many clothes should I buy in each size?
For babies, buy just a few pieces in each size, since they outgrow them quickly. For older kids you can buy more, because each size usually lasts longer.
Are EU sizes the same across all brands?
The system is the same, based on height, but the cut varies from brand to brand. Always check the product's size chart. For the clothes in our shop, use the Happy Nest size guide.
